    Biography

    Contemporary South African artist Diane Victor is well-known for her prints and drawings that examine corruption, war, and social injustice. Her images of lost children, created with charcoal and candle smoke, are among of Victor’s most cherished creations. “Candle smoke carbon deposits are used to create the faces on white paper. She said, “They are incredibly delicate and readily broken; as the carbon soot separates from the paper, they dissolve upon physical touch. “I was trying to translate this fragility into portraits made from a medium as impermanent as smoke itself because I was interested in the incredibly fragile nature of these human lives and of all human life.” She was born in Witbank, South Africa, in 1964, and later earned a BFA from
