In the Western Cape’s wheat fields, Maggie Laubser was born on the farm Bloubommetjieskloof, close to Malmesbury. Her paintings throughout her life were influenced by the early impressions of her childhood, which included farm life, the farm’s occupants, nature, flowers, and animals, all bathed in the ever-changing light. After departing for Europe in 1913, she resided in Antwerp and near Lake Garda, studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, and visited an artists’ colony in Laren in Holland. She had intimate interaction with German Expressionism in Berlin between 1922 and 1924, which helped her develop into an authoritative and dedicated painter. She eliminated all unnecessary details from her photos, boosted color and contrast, and kept only the most important symbolic shapes of her own
